Stop Being Afraid

Art and the Common Good,  Why Art Matters, an arts conference by the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council  held some jewels of information that were hopeful for artists and children.   Karl Unnash is a sculpture and glass artist who has a large studio in Pilot Mound, Minnesota. He makes art because he has a story to tell.

His message at the conference: Stop Being Afraid.  Put something out there; put ourselves out there. Be cautious, but not paranoid.  Be Bold—Be Brave.

Why does art matters?
Let creativity be free—allow the story to come out.
What is art being used for?

Artists are open to new experiences—open to being wrong.  Karl’s first experiences as a young boy were tactile, hands on, 3-D getting his hands dirty on the farm.  When he works with students, he tells them, “You can do this.” He allows kids to work with a process.  He reminds them to not take everything so seriously.  “You can’t make believe without making.”

In the video, Karl is working with students at John Marshall High School in Rochester, Minnesota on a stain glass project.  Karl, students, and other teachers share the process of creating beauty in a school.
